A letter from Joplin, MO. after the tornado

I just received this letter from my TAAN partner in Missouri, Brent Beshore. I have been following his activity on Twitter and Facebook for the past two days and have been genuinely inspired not only by his passion and astute use of social media in a time a crisis but by the results he  has generated in such a short time: he's rallied 133,000 people on a Facebook page and has raised $125,000 in 36 hours.

Here's what Brent wrote:

Although I have not met you all, I can't tell you how grateful and proud I am to be associated with such a fine group of people.  My hometown has been devastated. I've had friends killed and others with homes destroyed.  If you and your staffs could share the links below through social media it would help tremendously.  My staff has shut down our offices and are focused on it full time. We have 133,000 people on the FB page and have raised $125,000 in 36 hours through this effort. Please join us and help those who desperately need it. My sincerest thanks for your efforts.

Brent

I know a lot of readers are active in social media. I'm asking for your help. Donationg a few minutes of your social media skills could make a big difference to people who are struggling to overcome loss and adversity in the aftermath of the devastating Joplin tornado. Here are the connections that you can email, tweet, post on Facebook, or share however you can:

Facebook: Joplin, MO Tornado Recovery

Donation site: The Heart of Missouri United Way

Mobile phone donation: Text “JOPLIN” to 864833 to make a $10 donation to the Joplin Tornado Relief Fund.

Thanks.

Hi Sean,

Thanks for sharing this with everyone.

I would like to hold this up to all the social media naysayers - and there are plenty as you know I'm sure - as an example of the power, the sheer, raw, power and its unrivaled alacrity.

What other medium can "spread the word" with such precision and power and speed?

Thanks again and my heart along with my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone impacted by this terrible tragedy.

All the best,Steve O

Thanks Steve,Your help in spreading the word is very much appreciated. You are absolutely right about social media naysayers.

We have all heard a lot about the power of nature to destroy in the past few months. I hope people are also realizing the power of people to come together via social media and make things right again.

I'm inspired by the work Brent and many others like him are doing with this tool.

Thanks again — Sean
